Throwing Darts - The Proper Release
The proper release is almost just as important as the throw itself. If you don't know how to let go of the dart and follow it through to the board, you will end up with a wobbling dart in flight that will spray off to the side of the board.
When to Release Your Fingers During the Dart Throw
Your release on the dart should be a quick motion that you actively know you are doing. It should be just like ripping off a band-aid. If you can't feel your fingers release from the dart you are likely holding it too long and dragging them instead of releasing them. This will cause the flight to be negatively impacted and your dart will wobble in flight. When your arm has moved three quarters of the way, quickly remove your fingers from the dart and follow through the rest of the way. |
Proper Follow Through
Following through after you release the dart is just as important as in baseball or golf. It can have a huge impact on the force and trajectory of the dart in flight even after you aren't touching it. You should snap your wrist and make sure you don't allow your elbow to drop down after the release or the dart will also drop in flight. Keep your arm and elbow in an upward position just as you had it before the release.

Prevent the Wobble
The most common problem for beginner dart players is their darts wobble as they travel toward the board. Knowing why darts wobble will help you try to prevent it. Wobbling most often occurs because it is thrown straight or down versus angled upward along the parabolic curve. See aiming darts to learn more about the proper technique. It also sometimes happens because your arm or elbow isn't stable during the throw and/or release.
